A casino hotel on White Bear First Nations land in southeast Saskatchewan, beside the lakes and aspen hills of Moose Mountain.
The place
Bear Claw sits in lake country near the town of Carlyle, close to Moose Mountain Provincial Park and the summer cottages of Kenosee Lake. It is a modest property next to city casinos: a hotel, dining and a gaming floor, with the park and the lakes doing much of the entertaining.
Saskatchewan does not change its clocks. In summer Bear Claw keeps the same time as Calgary; in winter it keeps the same time as Kansas and Louisiana. The casino age in Saskatchewan is 19.
When to go
Summer is the season here: lake swimming, golf and park trails from June to August. The aspens turn gold in September.
Winters are long and very cold. That suits people who come for a quiet hotel night and the casino, less so anyone planning time outdoors.
Around it
Moose Mountain Provincial Park
Lakes, beaches and aspen forest just to the north.
Kenosee Lake
The resort village inside the park, with a summer beach and cabins.
Cannington Manor Provincial Historic Park
The site of a 19th-century English settlement on the prairie, a short drive east.
Before you book, ask
- How busy the hotel gets on summer weekends, when the park is full.
- Winter road conditions on your route.
- Which ID the casino accepts (the minimum age is 19).
- Live music or event nights during your stay.
