A hotel tower and casino just off Interstate 65 in south Alabama, owned by the Poarch Band of Creek Indians.
The place
Wind Creek Atmore rises out of a flat, green stretch of south Alabama, near the interstate that links Montgomery and Mobile. It works as a stop on a longer drive, to or from the Gulf beaches, New Orleans or the Florida Panhandle, as well as a destination of its own.
The resort is owned by the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, the only federally recognised tribe in Alabama, whose lands lie around Atmore. The casino sets its own age rule, so check it with the property before you go.
When to go
Spring and autumn are the comfortable seasons. Summers are hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November. If you are pairing the stay with the coast, keep an eye on the forecast in the days before you travel.
Around it
Gulf beaches
Pensacola Beach in Florida and the Alabama coast at Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, each roughly an hour or more by car.
Mobile
An old port city with a long Mardi Gras tradition, about an hour to the west.
Pensacola
A historic downtown and a long waterfront, about an hour to the south.
Before you book, ask
