A large resort on the edge of Lake Charles with a golf course, a pool area with a lazy river, and a casino, just off Interstate 10.
The place
L’Auberge is built for long weekends: golf in the morning, an afternoon at the pools, then dinner and the casino or a show. Lake Charles sits in southwest Louisiana, between Houston and Lafayette, and it is an easy drive from Texas.
Louisiana casinos admit guests aged 21 and over. The food of the region, Cajun and Creole, is a good reason to leave the resort for a meal or two; the front desk can point you to local places.
When to go
October to April is the comfortable half of the year for golf and walking. Summers are hot and humid, and the hurricane season runs from June to November.
In the weeks before Lent, Lake Charles holds a big Mardi Gras season with parades and costume balls. Rooms go quickly on those weekends.
Around it
Creole Nature Trail
A scenic road through marshes and wildlife refuges down to the Gulf of Mexico.
The lakefront and downtown
The city beach on the lake, the civic centre and downtown, a few minutes away by car.
Cajun country
Lafayette, with its dance halls and cooking, a little over an hour to the east.
